Evaluation, Question 2: Ellie Scott.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

Within our music video we have incorporated the theme of branding throughout. Branding is important to incorporate within our coursework as it connects the music video and the ancillary tasks together as one, using factors such as; font, images and layoutWe were able to do this by making sure that the two main characters, the politicians, were wearing the same outfits throughout and the video showed continuity. Obviously we had to film our video over a matter of days, so in order to show continuity we made sure everything looked the same every time we shot footage, therefore bringing in branding elements to our coursework. It was important when filming to make sure the two characters looked exactly the same each time in order to keep the same narrative and not cause confusion to the audience; ensuring that the same actors were wearing the same outfits and masks each time. This was particularly hard as we had to ensure that all three characters- David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband were available each time we decided to film footage, this was unfortunately not possible, so in some shots we had a different person acting, but just made sure that the outfits were the same to stick to the narrative and the elements of branding.
Within our digi-pack, we have included various elements of branding in order to stick to the theme of rebels and aggression, which is typical to the Punk/Rock genre and also to stick to the London/British theme displayed throughout our music video. Within our digi-pack we have stuck to the two main colours of red and blue to symbolise the patriotic theme of London/Britain, this is shown with the use of the Union Jack on the two CD covers and also within one of the photographs of the two politicians and also with the red and blue font used.

We have emphasised upon the patriotic theme and tried to represent London and Britain within our CD cover, we managed to do this by putting the names of the songs from the album on a tube map; this definitely displays the London theme as the tube line is a significant feature within the city of London. We also made sure that the digi-pack resembled the rebellious theme, we did this by using font inspired by the band the Sex Pistols, due to the fact that this band was also very controversial and caused trouble similarly to that of The Clash. The font is red and blue and is very eye-catching and bold, this yet again representing the aggressive tone developed on by the Punk/Rock genre

The hardcore tone is also conveyed with the graffiti affects used on one of the photographs of David Cameron and Nick Clegg. We chose to include this idea as we thought it proved the point that many people within the UK do not like the two politicians in power for many reasons, this, we have also represented within our video by including footage from the St.Pauls protests; proving that many British citizens are not content with the current government. This symbolises the anger and frustration currently being caused by that of the government. Below is our original idea, without the graffiti, it simply includes an image of the two politicians; we thought this was too plain and definitely thought the graffiti affect added to the digi-pack and fitted well with the theme of irony throughout our video.

Our digi-pack is not similarly to that of a traditional CD album digi-pack. Our digi-pack is extremely colourful and eye-catching, including various bold colours such as red, blue, yellow and green. To add to this, the use of the graffiti affects is not something a usual CD cover would include, our cover fits very well with the theme of our music video, which is very different and unlike the usual music video. Bands such as the Sex Pistols, however, have influenced our digi-pack, as we have used a similar font to their album cover and other covers from the Punk/Rock genre have inspired us. One album cover that did inspire us, as a group was the album ‘Suck it and see’ by the Arctic Monkeys, this album cover caught our eye because it was so plain but very bold at the same time, catching the attention of the target audience. Below is one of our original copies of an album cover we completed, using the 'Suck it and See' album as inspiration, however we thought this was too plain and uninteresting for our cover. We also liked album covers such as ‘Breakfast in America’ by Supertramp and ‘Sunny Days’ by Kid British. As a group, we especially liked these album covers as they looked at city landmarks, focusing on New York and one also included British Stereotypes such as, lots of rain. These are ideas that we have incorporated into our own CD album cover.

As a group, we were inspired by many album covers and tried to include factors from these album covers into our own work to improve our ideas. One of our inspirations for our album cover was the band ‘The Sex Pistols’. We really liked the font used by the band on their album cover and used a font very similar on our cover as it targets our audience due to the bold, eye-catching and rebellious type of font. We were also influenced by other CD album covers, including a cover called ‘Breakfast in America’ by Super Tramp. We really liked this particular album cover as it included a shot of the city of New York, a very famous and traditional picture of the city, this we thought linked to our theme of London within our video. We had in fact earlier considered having a photograph of London for our CD cover to stick to the theme of London and patriotism. As well as this album cover by Super Tramp, we were also inspired by an album cover from the band, Kid British, this cover also stuck to the theme of Britain, particularly focusing on the factor of weather and ‘typical British weather’.
As a group, we were also influenced and inspired by the artist, Simon Patterson, who is famous for a piece of art work using the basis of the Tube Map but to refer to different genres of people. This piece of art work gave us the idea of using a Tube Map as the back of the album cover and replacing the names of Tube Stations with the names of songs from the album by the Clash.

When creating our magazine advert, we tried to include as many factors of branding as possible in order to ensure that both the album digi-pack and the advert look similar and stuck to the same theme throughout. To make sure that the album digi-pack and the advert follow the same themes, we included the same font on the advert as used within the album digi-pack in order to stick to the rebellious and exaggerated theme used throughout our coursework. To add to this, we also included a picture of the two main characters within our video, David Cameron and Nick Clegg, this is also included within our digi-pack, therefore including identical branding elements throughout the two pieces of work. The photograph we included on our advert portrays the politicians in the same way as within the cd digi-pack, as troublesome and comical characters, the very opposite to how they are perceived in reality. We also made sure that the two politicians acted this way within our video, yet again to ensure that we are sticking to a theme and certain branding elements.

Our magazine advert does follow the conventions of a traditional magazine advert as we have purposely included various factors to ensure that our advert looks both realistic and similar to that of a professional advert within the media. One of these factors was the use of ratings by several magazines and TV channels in order to make the advert look realistic and look as if critics have actually listened to and analysed the album. We featured ratings from magazines and TV channels that we thought our target demographic would watch/listen to, to try and yet again focus on our target audience. The use of the ratings also made the album look more exciting and also is a promotional tool in persuading our target audience to purchase the album. Yet another factor that we included was the use of specific logos. Logos such as the ‘ITunes’ logo and the band’s website are also promotional tools, to add to this, we included the production company name and logo as this is compulsory within the industry.

Our magazine advert also follows the forms and conventions of a traditional magazine advert by being very colourful and eye-catching, this is obviously very important as we wanted to target our audience and catch their attention by using bold and bright colours in which also stick to the patriotic theme of Britain. We thought it was important, as a group, to feature the two main characters on the front of the advertisement in order to yet again attract the target audience’s attention and also to have a comical feel, similar to that of our video. Our inspiration for our magazine advert was in actual fact our CD album digi-pack, we were not influenced massively by any other magazine advert, we simply followed a similar theme to that of our CD album cover. We wanted to stick to the same theme and make sure that the advert, the album cover and the video all linked together. From the album cover, we used the same font and colouring, as well as a similar photograph within our advert; this ensured that we were sticking to the same theme throughout.
